If you are planning a visit to France soon, the administrative landscape of Europe’s borders is evolving. For many visa-exempt travelers, a passport alone will no longer be enough: ETIAS is on its way.
Our team can help you understand the new entry requirements, check whether you need an authorization, and identify the right procedure before departure.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is not a visa, but an electronic travel authorization. Inspired by the American ESTA model, it aims to strengthen the internal security of the Schengen Area by identifying potential risks before travelers reach European soil.
At a Glance:
Expected Launch: Late 2026.
Validity: 3 years (or until your passport expires).
Allowed Stay: Up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Countries Involved: More than 30 European countries, including France, Italy, Spain, and Germany.
Who Needs It?
The ETIAS authorization applies to citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. This includes:
British citizens (since Brexit).
Travelers from the USA, Canada, and Australia.
Many countries in Latin America and Asia (Japan, South Korea, etc.).
Note: If you already hold a short-stay or long-stay visa for France, or a residence permit from an EU country, you do not need an ETIAS.
How to Obtain ETIAS for France
The process is entirely digital and is completed via the official European Union website or dedicated mobile app.
1. The Online Application
You will need to provide:
Personal data (name, date of birth, address).
Travel document details (a biometric passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended return).
Information regarding criminal records and past travel to conflict zones.
2. The Cost
The fee is set at €7 for adults. The application is free for:
Minors (under 18 years old).
Seniors over 70 years old.
3. Processing Times
In the vast majority of cases (over 95%), the response is nearly instantaneous. However, if additional checks are required, the process can take anywhere from 4 to 30 days.
EES vs. ETIAS: Don’t Get Confused
It is crucial to distinguish ETIAS from the EES (Entry/Exit System), which is also being deployed in 2025/2026:
System | Nature | Required Action |
EES | Biometric border control system. | Photo and fingerprinting upon arrival (automated). |
ETIAS | Pre-travel authorization. | Online form to be completed before departure. |
Practical Tips for Travelers
Check Your Passport: Ensure it is biometric and has sufficient validity.
Apply Early: Don’t wait until the day before your flight, even though the process is usually fast.
Beware of Third-Party Sites: Use only the official EU portal to avoid excessive fees or scams.
